BIO

Veronica Ryan-Silverberg is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, painting, and mixed media. Her work explores memory, materiality, and the relationship between inner experience and the physical world, drawing on a lifelong interest in perception, attachment, and the traces left behind by time and human presence.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Veronica grew up in a cold-water flat in a working-class neighborhood whose grit, resilience, and layered histories continue to inform her artistic sensibility. The city’s weathered architecture, overlooked spaces, and evidence of continual transformation became an early visual language that still resonates throughout her work.

As a young adult, Veronica moved to Amsterdam, where she opened a restaurant and discovered an unexpected passion for costume design for television and film. Returning to New York, she earned a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and spent several years designing high-end women’s apparel. These experiences cultivated an enduring appreciation for material, texture, construction, and the expressive possibilities of surface— qualities that remain central to her artistic practice.

Her curiosity about the human psyche eventually led her to a career as a psychoanalyst specializing in trauma and attachment. This work profoundly shaped her understanding of memory, identity, and the unconscious, deepening questions that continue to inform her studio practice. During these years, photography became a parallel means of investigation, leading her back to the streets of New York to document urban landscapes, decay, and the subtle visual narratives embedded within the built environment.

Following her retirement from clinical practice, Veronica devoted herself fully to making art. Today, she combines photography, painting, and mixed media to investigate the interplay between concealment and revelation, structure and chance, permanence and impermanence. Through layered surfaces and tactile materials, she explores how memory, history, and emotion become embedded within place and object.

Veronica Ryan-Silverberg has exhibited her work in numerous group exhibitions throughout New York City. Her multidisciplinary practice reflects a lifetime of creative exploration across design, psychology, and the visual arts, bringing these experiences together in work that invites contemplation and open-ended dialogue.
